MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, ROMANIA - Hundreds of U.S. and international military paratroopers jumped from a half-dozen cargo planes flying into Romania on May 11 culminating in the ongoing support week of the U.S. Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz for one of the main exercises.

The garrison's participation in DEFENDER-Europe 21 through its sites in Romania and Bulgaria, known as the Black Sea Area Support Activity, is a multi-pronged and ongoing effort that stages American and international Soldiers and crews for success. About 1,000 American soldiers and airmen, and Dutch, Polish and German troops, called "MKs," returned home in about 10 days. Weapons, ammunition, vehicles and more are stored in dozens of facilities throughout the site, while residents live in 30 barracks and 22 newly erected tents.

"We have been agile and responsive enough that we can continue to focus on garrison operations while supporting this massive army and taking care of the training of hundreds of soldiers during DEFENDER-Europe 21," said Dave Keller, director of operations. of MK, who added that this multitasking ability was in the wheelhouse site. "Operationally, we can demonstrate the vital role the garrison plays in supporting the military, and that's exciting."

The bulk of the garrison effort in Romania culminated on 10 May with a "joint forced entry" at Boboc Air Base, Romania, with the Polish 6th Airborne Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, 11th Airborne Brigade German/Dutch Air Assault, and the Romanian 495th Parachute Battalion. The Boboc Jumps were part of three near-simultaneous air operations conducted by several NATO allied nations in support of Swift Response 21, a military crisis response training event for multinational air forces, and other aspects of DEFENDER-Europe 21 .

Meanwhile, at the garrison site in Bulgaria, efforts continued in the harsh environment. The Novo Selo training area comprises approximately 56 square kilometers of training space used by the US and NATO for tank training and more. More than 1,000 people have added to the population of the site, although most of their work on the exercises began later.

Sergeant Christopher Stocum is the IMCOM-Europe lead for Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, but he is deployed to assist the MWR team. He says the BOSS experience and life as a young Solider helped him focus on his fellow GIs as people.

"Soldiers are more than just numbers. It's important to give people options and keep them in control," Stocum said, highlighting a recent cornhole tournament that drew more than 40 people. "Treat them like a man is number one. Soldiers with high morale will work harder than those who are not."

Tommy R. Mize, Director of the Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe, said that providing training support for the Defender 21 is one of the strengths of the IMCOM-Europe Team.

Support for the exercise was shared with the garrison, Romanian hosts, contractors, and the Black Sea Area Support Group, which oversees two sites plus one in Greece, and directs the support part of visiting troops in Romania.

Colonel Andrew Conant, commander of the Black Sea Area Support Group, said integration, cooperation and communication between his team and the garrison was critical to ensure successful live support for the troops rotational and trainee in Romania and Bulgaria.

"I have always been impressed by the professionalism and team approach between ASG and ASA," he said. "Our combined approach to serving the test audience has resulted in the successful movement, life support and maintenance of 2,000 personnel in MK alone."

Conant also highlighted the capabilities of the "Mayor's Cell," an integrated team of three IMCOM-Europe staff members and four Soldiers joined at the hip with the staff of the Sea Area Support Group Black.
